Sugar and Spice
The European demand for more resources was what eventually fueled colonization of the Indian subcontinent.
British East India Company
Having territory in India was vital for trade with Europe and Asia. The subcontinent had exotic spices that Europeans have never seen to support their empires.
The resources in India, like tea and opium, lured London’s businessmen into India and the East Indies, forming the British East India Company which was rivaled with the Dutch East India Company. The exporting goods was vital with the two companies, and had a war about it. It eventually had a private army and used it to expand more territories.
The colonization of India would have not have been possible without the British East India Company as the foundation.
